The greatest example of incarnational ministry is God becoming human in Christ and serving humanity through his life, death, resurrection, and ascension.  One day, our King shall return to earth and separate those who believe and follow Christ’s ways from those who live a selfish life.  How can we keep a “serving” posture helping the hungry, stranger, sick and imprisoned?  Missionary Frank Laubach developed the CIHU prayer.  It stands for “Can I help you?”  He started everyday by asking God, “Can I help you (reach someone today?)” He then went out and watched how God answered the prayer as he loved and served others.  When we do things for the least of these, we do it to Christ.  Sermon text: Matthew 25:31

Firefighters are required to put on full Bunker Gear (protective boots, fire retardant pants and jacket, a hood and helmet, a protective mask, a self-contained breathing apparatus, and gloves) when entering a structure in response to a fire alarm, even when no smoke or fire is visible.  90% of all calls are false alarms, but 10% of the time, there is a fire inside that has poisonous gases, fire, and explosion capabilities that can bring harm to first responders.  In every response, full Bunker Gear it to be worn.  For the Christian, there is often no warning when a crisis might occur in life.  That is why we are to “put on the full armor of God”: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted for readiness that comes from the gospel, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.  If a believer is not spending time in the Scripture and does not have an active prayer life, it is like setting aside the sword of the Spirit and picking up a pocketknife to defend oneself against the devil.  Now is the time to be strong in the Lord and put on the full armor of God. Jesus begins his ministry by being led by the Spirit into the wilderness for forty days and forty nights.  He enters a harsh environment, depriving himself of food but filling himself with God so that he can prepare himself for ministry.  Because he has just been baptized and heard the voice of the Lord declare “This is my Son, whom I love,” is identity is secure.  Ignatius of Loyola spoke of having a “holy indifference” – letting go of what doesn’t help you love God or others and staying committed to things that help you love God.  Jesus models this for us.  His wilderness time prepared him to face down the temptation of the devil.  It should be no surprise that the Enemy’s first tactic is to question Jesus’ identity:  “If you are the Son of God, then…”  Our identity is in Christ.  Getting this right helps us to fulfill our purpose. It was said of Oxford professor, author, and theologian, C.S. Lewis, that he was “the most thoroughly converted man” that the person making the comment had ever known.  In this passage of Scripture, we get a glimpse into the heart of the Apostle Paul who though converted by Christ, still had some “holdout” sins in his life that caused him to describe himself as unspiritual and a slave to sin.  As Methodists, we believe in sanctification and “being made perfect” in love.  Even though your ambition made not be to be the most thoroughly converted, how about partnering with the Holy Spirit to become more converted or even more saved as you allow Christ to deliver you from the unconverted holes in your heart.Sermon text: Romans 7: 14-25

Human souls have an Achilles’ heel: We have an astonishing capacity to handle adversity, calamity, and duress – and then one day our soul simply says. “I’m done.  I don’t want to do this anymore.”  In a culture that has become soft and at the same time has increasing complexities and challenges,  it is time to pray for a greater strength.  In this message, we learn of Daniel’s commitment to remain faithful to God while in captivity in Babylon where he is immersed in a pagan culture of literature, religion, and idol worship.  He experiences the deliverance of God from the lion’s den and is strengthened by a visiting angel so that he can fulfill his ministry of prophesy to God’s people.  Lessons to be learned:  spiritual practices lay the groundwork for strength; expect enemy interference; don’t quit on God; receive the touch of God to be strengthened. When life’s disruptions disorient you, it might be a good time to check to see if any idols have placed themselves in front of your devotion to God and desire to please Him.  Everyone has a “Primal Drive for Life” (John Eldredge, Wild at Heart).  Where will you take your thirst?  Will you keep God as your life-giving water supply, or will you replace the spring of living water with broken cisterns that cannot hold water? Behind the great movements of God (Jesus and His earthly ministry, Paul and his missionary journeys, and William Tyndale’s translating of the Bible into English) there have been financial supporters or patrons who quietly supported those doing the work.  What do all of these individuals have in common?  They like storing up for themselves treasures in heaven.  When we invest in God’s Kingdom, we are often investing in the “long-game” rather than seeking short-term satisfaction.  We are also investing in the spiritual lives of people.  This sermon accompanied Marvin’s annual stewardship campaign. Jesus addresses those who have pursued him following the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000.  Jesus encourages them to work just as hard for the bread of God that satisfies and gives life to the world as they have worked to track him down.  He then states that He is the Bread of Life.  Holy Communion is the church’s way to celebrate that Jesus nourishes our souls.  Communion reminds us that Jesus is our Passover Lamb; He is the way of the New Covenant; and He is the Bride Groom for the world-wide Church. This week, we continue our series on worship, giving consideration to life in the Spirit. We are a people born of the Spirit, whose lives are marked by the Spirit and for whom worship is life in the Spirit. Sermon text: Romans 8:14-17.

It was Jesus who told the woman at the well in Samaria that “God is spirit, and His worshipers mut worship in Spirit and in truth.”  The greatest attribute of a person is that they have a soul.  They are a spiritual person having a human experience.  The Holy Spirit has been given to us in the Church to help us to worship God and understand truth.  The Spirit brings us into relationship with God; changes our heart motivation; gives testimony to who we are in Christ; and gives us the long-journey understanding of worshiping even when we might be going through suffering or persecution. Worship! This week we look at how we run the race that is the Christian life. Hebrews helps us to understand that we are not alone in this race. We have such a great cloud of witnesses that surround us and we have Jesus Christ Himself who has gone before us and set the pace so that we can run the race out of a posture of worship. A new sermon series begins helping the Marvin Family to gain a deeper theological understanding  and appreciation for worship.  God has created us for the purpose of worship.  In the words of A.W. Tozer, “We are born and reborn from above to worship.  We are created and re-created to worship.”  Worship is like running a life-long race where we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, asked to throw-off the things that hinder and the sin that entangles us, run with perseverance, and fix our eyes upon Jesus.  In the words of missionary Frank Laubach, “Open your soul and entertain the glory of God and after a while the glory will be reflected in the world around you.”Sermon text: Hebrews 12:1-2

What are we to do when we experience conflict in the church or in personal relationships? Of course, we should seek to brainstorm and discern the best way forward together, but what are we to do if both parties are determined to go a different direction?  In Acts 15, we see that the early church made adjustments to make room for the Gentiles, but when Paul and Barnabas could not come to a mutual agreement over taking John Mark on the second missionary journey, they parted ways.  The results:  There were now two mission teams instead of one; Paul elevates Silas to missionary partner and goes to places he had not been before; John Mark and Barnabas serve together and John Mark eventually writes the first Gospel.  In the end, when Paul is imprisoned in Rome, he asks for John Mark to visit him.  In short, the work of the Lord goes on! The creation stories of Genesis speak of human beings being made in the image of God, in God’s likeness.  What is referred to as the Imago Dei is most often understood as having the following characteristics of God: being spiritual beings, having a rational mind that can think, solve problems and be creative, and thirdly, to be moral beings.  As the church goes through a time of discernment regarding its beliefs on human sexuality, this message challenges the Marvin community to apply their Imago Dei characteristics. Paul emphasizes that our faith is the faith that has been revealed to us by God and passed down by those that went before us. While faith has individual implications for each person, it is not recreated and built into something that is different than what the followers of Jesus believed. We live in a world that is often trying to convince us that we need more: more information, more experiences, more training to truly be happy and fulfilled.  The Apostle Paul, combating the heretical teaching of Gnosticism of the first century, reminds the church that with Jesus, they have all that they need.  In Jesus, the fullness of God dwells.  Jesus is head of the church, the leader of the resurrection people.  Through Christ’s death and resurrection, the world and the universe has been reconciled to God. The book of Colossians is written to address a specific problem in a community thousands of years ago but it still speaks to us today addressing our insufficient views of Jesus. Most everyone has been to a wedding celebration.  Some of the common elements of the celebration include: the gathering of loved ones and friends, the wearing of new clothes by the bride, wedding party, and family, and the joyous supper or reception.  In John’s revelation regarding the coming of Christ, many of the wedding customs of the Biblical times are referenced.  Along with the “Alleluias” lifted up, Christ’s Bride, the Church stands ready, adorned in her righteous acts, to greet God’s Lamb. Jesus challenges us to be perfect. How can that be? We consider this week if this is an achievable task or is it idealism suited for motivation. John Wesley believe holiness and perfection was something we should pray for and was possible in God’s grace. Sermon text: Matthew 5:43-48

Many Christians talk about wanting to do God’s will for their lives.  If you are truly hungering to do the will of God, then you will follow the example of Christ to share spiritual conversations with others, be respectful and patient in the dialogue, and invite them to join you in following Jesus.  Jesus invites his followers to finish the work that he has started. Jesus says that His food is to do the will of the one who sent him. This is something we can grasp since Jesus is the son of God sent into the world. But what about us? How do we know the will of God? How do we strive to be obedient to his leading? The will of God is often times reduced to all our decisions of vocation and purpose, but maybe we need a bigger perspective of God’s will! Sermon text: John 4:27-38

Jesus, like the Old Testament heroes of faith, Moses and Elijah practiced solitude coupled with fasting to prepare for His ministry.  When Jesus was tested by the Devil in the wilderness, He quoted Scripture in His rebuke.  John Mogabgab states: “God has chosen to be bound to the words of Scripture; in and through them, the Holy One comes near.” Sermon text: Matthew 4:11

We begin a new Lenten series this week as we consider the objects of our heart’s desire. This week focuses on Jesus and the temptation in the wilderness to begin His ministry. Jesus does not settle for personal reprieve over his mission to the world. Instead, Jesus hungers for God’s Word in the world and shows us the response under sinful temptation to “take care of yourself.” Sermon text: Matthew 4:1-11

Claire Cloninger writes: “The spiritual can infuse the tangible, creating holy moments at any time.” I experienced three holy moments (spiritual conversations) within a thirty minute window at an assisted living facility. God gave me a gift reminding me of His presence and that I had ministry appointments to fulfill. Jesus’ experience of transfiguration upon the mountain, not only encouraged him, but motivated him to fulfill his calling to lay down his life for the salvation of the world. As we conclude our Canceled sermon series we discuss what it looks like to move past our brokenness and failures. Paul is one of the best biblical examples because he does not ignore his past but sees the journey as one of the biggest indicators of the power of God in his life. His past does not disqualify, but actually points to what is possible in God. Maybe it is the same for us and that truth filters how we might engage with a world hungry to cancel. Sermon text: 1 Timothy:14-16

The Bible calls the follower of Christ to have faith and to trust in God.  An additional spiritual exercise is the “attentive” life that allows us to look back in reflection over past events and see the hand of God working.  A medical colloquialism is the “retrospectoscope” that allows doctors to make diagnoses in hindsight.  Studying Joseph’s life-story we see that what his brothers intended for harm, brought about deliverance for God’s people.  God is always working things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Sermon text: Genesis 45:1-11.

As we continue our series discussing “cancel culture” we now turn to failure. Scripture is full of failure and it is ironic that we try to cover up all of ours. The story of Peter is an intriguing one especially when we consider the failure of Judas that is presented next to Peter in the gospels. Both failed, both overcome with guilt and shame, only one could embrace the forgiveness of Jesus. Sermon text: John 21:15-19.

Are you trusting God or are you putting more confidence in human reason?  The people of Judah had hedged their faith by trusting God and other gods and political alliances.  Jeremiah describes the difference between trusting in God and trusting in ourselves. Sermon text: Jeremiah 17:5-10.

Cancel culture can be a lot of things. At it’s best it can be a movement of activism to boycott someone or something that has caused harm… at it’s worst it can be a sport of defamation and attempt at social control for the sake of notoriety, a platform, or just more likes on Twitter. What is the Christian’s responsibility in this new social ethos? First we need to understand accountability; accountability for ourselves, but also what is productive for others. Sermon text: 2 Samuel 12:1-13.

The Romans of Jesus’ time on earth had an expression: “There is nothing more useful than sun and salt.”  How appropriate then that Jesus would refer to His disciples as the “salt of the earth and the light of the world.”  In this message, listeners will learn of the importance of salt’s purity and its use for preservation.  Jesus calls his followers to preserve the world from the decay of sin and be a reflection of His true light that others may see our good works and glorify our Father in Heaven. Paul writing to the church in Corinth says that the people there are an aroma of life, recommendation letters that tell the work of Jesus in the world. We are called to be the presence of Christ in the world and that requires that our lives are submitted to Jesus, that we are present in other’s life, and we are ready to live out His story in the world. Our series now turns to the historic Methodist movement to look at a small group called the class meeting that helped members focus on following the way of Jesus. This gathering was all about a single focus of growing in holiness together and it shaped the movement that is responsible for us being here today. Following Jesus is more about being an apprentice; being with the teacher, becoming like the teacher, and doing what the teacher does in the world. This was probably more practical when Jesus was standing in front of his disciples, so how do we live this out today? Paul says in Ephesians that community is the critical piece to becoming like Jesus. Perhaps the most peculiar characters in the birth narratives of Jesus are the Magi. These people probably practiced some religion that would not be welcome in the church, spent a lot of time obsessing over the stars, and are the last people you would think that would take off to go see Jesus. It is interesting that 3 out of 4 of the soils in the parable of Matthew 13 hear the word but do not produce fruit of life. These are hard statistics to fathom for the Christian but what if the remnant produces a harvest greater than we can imagine? Spiritual Formation writer and speaker Richard Foster once said, “Superficiality is the curse of this age.”  In the Parable of the Soils we learn that shallow soil and hearts filled with rocks can often cause short-lived joy because one’s faith can’t grow deep.  In this message, listeners are challenged to work hard to remove rocks while following Jesus for the long haul. All Saints Day is a part of the Christian calendar calling us to remember those that have passed in our community in the past year and also the martyrs and saints of the historical Church. The saints help us to see what it looks like to run the race, to pursue Christ, and to offer ourselves to the world around us. In a difficult time in our world, the saints are vital to our us because the show us the way. Sermon text: Philippians 3:4-14

It is an odd thing to think that God has entrusted us with the continuation of His Kingdom, but that is exactly what has happened. Peter helps us to see how we can live out this calling even in hardship. Sermon text: 1 Peter 4:7-11

Through the prophet Malachi, God accuses the Israelites of robbing him of tithes and offerings, but what he is really getting at is what they are robbing from themselves and their witness to the world around them. This is the only place in the bible where God tells his people to test him and it is about testing his faithfulness if they will be obedient. The next generation has been entrusted to us to share with them the Lord so that they will put their trust in God, not forget the Lord, and keep His commands. Sermon text: Psalm 78:1-8

God has entrusted us with much and how we live into it is important. Paul understood that as he challenged the church to “work out their salvation.” God’s love is at work in us and we have the opportunity to grow into this love. Sermon text: Philippians 2:12-16

We have talked about hospitality in the family of God and to the stranger, but God has his eyes set on something more radical—loving our enemy. Jesus says this is the fullness of love and commands it of his followers. This feels like a bar that is too high…is it? Sermon text: Matthew 5:43-48

In the book of Acts we see an example of hospitality to a stranger from Philip, one of the leaders of this new movement. Philip’s story with the Ethiopian eunuch invites us to consider how we are joining God is His mission in the world. Hospitality to the stranger requires that we believe in the hospitality of the cross of Christ and we believe in God’s work in the world. Sermon text: Acts 8:26-40

Hospitality is a way of life. It defines who we are as a people of God, who we are as a church. God has been so good to us and he invites us to do and be the same. God invites us to be responsive to the hospitality that he has shown us—what’s happened to us must be done by us. Sermon text: Luke 24:13-35

God is the greatest host of all. He has made room for everyone in His grace so that we are no longer strangers to Him or with other believers. In Christ, we are “brought near” by being citizens of heaven, fellow members of God’s family, and a holy temple where God dwells. Remember your true identity. Sermon text: Ephesians 2:19-22

Mary and Martha are good friends of Jesus and there is a story in the bible about the time they hosted him for dinner. One of them is running around the house being a host and the other is sitting at Jesus’ feet deep in conversation. This narrative invites us in to consider the impact of hurry and the ways it robs us from God, our loved ones and from ourselves. Sermon text: Luke 10:38-42

We live in a world filled with the constant dance between advertiser and consumer. In so many ways our lives are wrapped up in this dance and it steals opportunities to experience God. Jesus seemed to know this possibility has he talked about the damage money can do in our lives. It is clear that Jesus was not after poverty, but after our hearts…so why do we read him like he wanted the former? Sermon text: Matthew 6: 19-24

We are at an immediate disadvantage when we talk about Sabbath in our day. Surrounded by an endless work expectation and 24/7 onslaught from technology and advertisement eager for your consumption, taking a day off seems novel. What if the Sabbath was made for us so that we could be who we were created to be? That seems to be what God thinks of the Sabbath and maybe we are tired because we have ignored it. The first practice in our journey to eliminate hurry from our lives is a consistent practice of silence and solitude. Jesus practiced this in his own ministry as represented in the gospels. Our world is more efficient, more connected and more saturated with distractions than ever before. We are always in a hurry and are unaware of the impact it has on our faith and our lives. The conclusion of our series and the creed ends with the resurrection of the body and the everlasting life. To profess belief in this is to anchor our ultimate hope in our eternal promise in Jesus. In the final lines of the Apostle’s Creed the focus turns to implications for the church and Christians. The forgiveness of sins is the outpouring of Grace bound in the creed. In many ways we have lost context for sin, but Christ came so that we can be truly human. This involves forgiveness and freedom. Sermon text: Romans 3:8-18

We have made it to the part of the Apostle’s Creed that turns from the trinity to the expression of God in the world. This week we consider the implications of the Church of Jesus Christ; both universal and local. Sermon text: Matthew 16:15-19

The Holy Spirit is the animating presence of God at work in the world. Scripture talks about the Spirit from the beginning of the Bible and not just after Pentecost, showing us an important framework and expectation for the purpose of the Spirit in the world. The goal of God’s final judgment is not reward and punishment but victory over all that is godless.  The judgment will mark “a new creation” - in essence a restoration of the purity and beauty of God’s original creation – free of sin and evil. Sermon text: Matthew 24 & 25

We believe that Jesus has died and risen from the dead but that was then, what is Jesus doing right now? The reign of Jesus as a result of the ascension is as fuzzy as bad Hollywood representations of Jesus floating away into the sky. The creed takes a wide pass at the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The theological and doctrinal truths hold layers that the church has often struggled to represent in the full presentation of redemption for the world in Jesus. The first line of the Apostle’s Creed is “I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.” Found in these first few words is a symmetry of power and relationship. The Church has professed faith through statements of beliefs called creeds since the beginning. These creeds contain the contents of the Christian gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ.
